Love New Donk City, really enjoying the game now, although Galaxy and 3D world have better, more focused platforming. New Donk City is essentially Lego City, it even has the RC car bit from that game. I wanted a Mario City game since Lego City, this is as close to it as you could get with a few of its own cool twists. I don't like that I cannot replay the city with the rain though, its all sunny now. It looked so awesome with the reflections and water everywhere.
I haven't played the game I don't have a Switch.
I wanted a Mario City game since I first played GTA III on the PS2 in 2001. I actually wanted a game similar to GTA but with Mario characters.
Now I realise it is a pretty stupid idea but the city could be cool.

It is, it even has a drivable moped.
I've been down on the game but last night I beat the story... ok HOLY SHIT THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! That's what I want, that's what I want the whole game to be! That final level is one of the best mario levels ever! Almost every transformation is used, one after the other, every skill you learned all in one perfect level!
And that ending!!!!! Everything about it! Going full sonic! Perfect!
Then the post game stuff!!!!! New challenges everywhere. I went into one level that was like Mario sunshine pack less levels! Seems Nintendo saved all the best stuff for later.
It's still no Galaxy but at least I am seeing the genius in this game.
I'm also no fan of the game's approach to coins acting as a real currency. I also find it strangely contemporary how you can track down the coins you lose when you die as in dark souls or shovel knight.
I’ve went back and tried to find all of the moons in the earlier worlds. The genius of this game really comes through when you explore and realize how much you’ve totally missed.
This game has similar issues like BOTW freedom gives rise to tons of mundane tasks that have little value rather than tight level design. A lot of the post game stuff is more very basic objectives like grab the moon on the hill. But stomp the glowing spot on the floor. Talk to peach.
Yes there are brand new "levels" in each world and these are better than what came before but it's not enough. We used to get a whole game of those great level's now we get them sporatically. It's fun game but it could be way better.
In regards to mundane tasks in BOTW and this, how does it compare to something like GTA which is full of those?
In a different way to old school 3D collect-a-thon platformers?
Yes. N64 era platformers had end-of-level items that gave you a clear goal with levels built around them that culminated into an achievement, and a secondary collectables (and tertiary, fourth-iary, and so on). Here, it's like the end-of-level item ceased to exist and was replaced by a commodity. Very few of the Moons you find give you a feeling of achievement. For one, they don't end the level. You often stumble upon them. 'Yes, I did it' is replaced by 'Oh, here's another one.
I guess N64 era platformers encouraged exploration through their collectibles, while Odissey seemingly has Moons sprinkled all over the place and often they're not even tied to exploration or feats of platforming.
I think the amount of platforming is close to Galaxy. I think the reason there are so many moons that you can just walk to is because there are hundreds more of them compared to the stars in a typical Mario 3D game. It’s just Nintendo’s way of catering to different types of gamers.
I find it nice to not being kicked out of a world once I find a moon.
Yeah, you're right, they do transport you back to the start of the level... But they don't take you out of it. This iis the first 3D mario on consoles without a hub, which has always served as an enjoyable area to just kick back in between levels. Anyhow, I think it was a mistake to use the same 'currency' for end of level stuff and rewards for exploration. it devaluates your achievements. What's the worth of 3 moons, when I can find those in under 3 minutes by just running around? Also, there might be a lot to 'do', but, at least for now where I'm at, it seems like there's too little scripted content. Even in Sunshine, which this game is often compared too, every level would set you with a specific challenge, which allowed the game to be focused. Maybe that's what I feel is lacking from Odissey, focus. Mario games have become known for their scattershot gameplay ideas, but they were presented to you within clearly defined borders and challenges. Odissey is taking more of a sandbox approach.
So a Banjo approach? Find musical notes anywhere and puzzle pieces are harder to find?
Again, I believe it was Nintendo’s way of making the game for everyone. Everyone can get enough moons to make it to Bowser....for better or worse.
